Molybdenum (Mo) Chemical properties, Health and ...
Molybdenum. The metal is silvery white, very hard transition metal, but is softer and more ductile than tungsten. Scheele discovered it in 1778. It was often confused with graphite and lead ore. It has a high elastic modulus, and only tungsten and tantalum, of the more readily available metals, have higher melting points. Molybdenum has one of the highest melting points of all pure elements.

Molybdenum Facts
Interesting Molybdenum Facts: Carl Wilhelm Scheele of Sweden discovered molybdenum in 1781. He was experimenting with molybdenite ore, which was always believed to contain lead. Scheele demonstrated that the element was not lead, and named the new element after the mineral.

Molybdenum properties
Molybdenum, element number 42 of the periodic table, lies in the table's second transition series, in Group 6B between chromium and tungsten. It has one of the highest melting temperatures of all the elements, yet unlike most other highmelting point metals, its density is only 25% greater than iron's.

The Metal Profile for Molybdenum
Molybdenum produced as a byproduct of copper from copper porphyry deposits, like the Bingham Canyon deposit in Utah, is removed as molybdenum disulfate during flotation of the powder copper ore. The concentrate is roasted to make molybdic oxide, which can be put through the same sublimation process to produce molybdenum metal.
